About Us

Northland Fly is a specialty shop located in Port McNeill, British Columbia. Geographically, Port McNeill is located on the north end of Vancouver Island about half an hour south of Port Hardy. For those driving from the mainland, Port McNeill is a four hour drive from Departure Bay, the ferry terminal in Nanaimo.

Northland Fly deals exclusively in tackle manufactured by R.B Meiser Fly Rods of Medford Oregon. They produce proprietary lines of Double Handed Rods, Reels and Lines. Our philosophies align perfectly as both shops place huge emphasis on two handed casting and the new evolving technique of tackle and fly.

We are located in the heart of some of the best British Columbian wild Salmon and Steelhead fishing. The scenery is spectacular, the rivers pristine.

With river systems containing residential rainbows, cutthroat trout, steelhead and all species of wild Pacific Salmon, the fishing season encompasses the entire year.

With the end of the Coho fishing in the late fall, fishing for winter steelhead begins in November and continues through March on some rivers. By that time, cutthroat trout are on the move in search of migrating salmon fry. Fishing for several species continues through the summer, which culminates with the return of salmon to their natal rivers in the fall. The north end of Vancouver Island is an angler's paridise.

In today’s fast paced world one of the only places to find peace is on the river bank, looking out over a clear cold stream with a fly riding high on the water. This makes all life’s problems seem trivial. Fly fishing is not only a sport, it is a way of life and understanding, from the artistic rhythm of a soft cast to the conservation of catch and release . It’s all about quality of life … release the Angler in all of us.

Being able to retrace the steps of such people as Roderick Haig-Brown on rivers like the Nimpkish and also the Kilpala brings thoughts to mind of history and conservation.

Northland’s owner, Perry Wilson, was born and raised on Vancouver Island. Perry grew up understanding the local rivers, wild salmon, steelhead, trout and dolly varden char.

The business was enhanced when Andy Murray, from the famous House of Hardy in Alnwick, England, began teaching Perry the art of angling, specifically the spectacular casts of the Spey. Now that two handed or spey casting has hit North America by storm, the Perry is ahead of the crowd offering his expertise and knowledge to both novice and experienced fly fisher alike.

Whether it involves fine tuning your casting, or finding the rod and line combination that best matches your abilities, Northland Fly and R.B Meiser can make you a better angler.

I look forward to hearing from you.
